A recent study revealed the surprising amount of money Liverpool has spent on transfers over the last decade.

The Reds have been one of the most successful teams in Europe over the last ten seasons.

Between 2014 and 2024, Liverpool added eight new trophies to their trophy wall, with the club enjoying its most dominant era in the 21st century in that time.

Led mainly by the now-departed Jurgen Klopp, the Reds went toe-to-toe with Manchester City domestically.

They also competed favourably in Europe, reaching three UEFA Champions League finals and one UEFA  Europa League final in that time.

There were also some Premier League title near misses, as well as strong domestic cup performances.

Some big-money signings, such as Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Darwin Nunez, and Dominik Szoboslai, joined the club during that period, with Van Dijk and Alisson particularly instrumental in the Reds’ dominance during this period.

However, despite the huge amount Liverpool spent in assembling their most successful squad in the last ten years, it pales in comparison with the net amount their rivals in the Premier League and Europe spent during that period.

The surprising amount FSG spent in the last decade

In a recent study done by the CIES Football Observatory, Liverpool sits far outside the top ten in the list of football’s biggest transfer spenders of the last decade.

With a net spend of just £304million, the Reds sit 17th on the list below the likes of Bournemouth (£318million), Aston Villa (£433million) and West Ham (£456million).

This figure is three times less than the net spend of Liverpool’s long-time rivals, Manchester United, who sit top of the list with a net spend of £1.08billion.

The Red Devils have signed expensive players like Paul Pogba, Anthony, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho, Romelu Lukaku, and Angel di Maria but have enjoyed far less success than Liverpool.

NExt to Manchester United in the list of top spenders is Chelsea, who spent £1.07billion (€1.2bn) in the last decade.

The rest of the top five in the Observatory’s list are Ligue 1 giants PSG and north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham.

The Gunners have spent £661million (€795m) while local rivals Spurs, surprisingly, have splashed out £591million (€711m) since 2015.

Comparatively, Manchester City, who have been the most successful English club in this period spent a net sum of £585million on transfers.

However, despite Liverpool’s relatively small net spend, the club has remained competitive in Europe and the Premier League this season, thanks in no small part to smart recruitment and a strong coaching staff.

The Reds have adapted well to Arne Slot, who replaced Klopp at the beginning of this season.

The Dutchman has made a record-breaking start to the new season, which has seen Liverpool sit top of the Premier League and Champions League tables.

Top ten highest net spend (2015-2024)

1.

Manchester United – £1.08billion (€1.3bn)

2.

Manchester City – £585million (€703m)

7.

Newcastle United – £521million (€626m)
